How Can Sun Damage Our Skin?

Have you noticed skin concerns like dullness, fine lines, and uneven pigmentation? Sun exposure is one of the most powerful causes of aging. The sun damages your skin in several ways, leading to what you may think are inevitable signs of aging. Fortunately, Rejuve Med Spa offers several treatment options to undo sun damage and provide brighter, more even skin.

How Can Sun Damage Our Skin?

Sunlight contains the visible wavelengths of light along with wavelengths beyond what we can see. On one end, infrared wavelengths are felt as heat. On the other end, ultraviolet (UV) light can penetrate the skin and cause damage to your cells. UVA light contributes to the most significant signs of aging, while UVB is more associated with burns, but both are very harmful.

UV light from the sun causes damage by traveling deep into the dermis. It damages cellular DNA, putting cells at risk of becoming skin cancer. It also damages the collagen proteins that give your skin its firmness and support, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. UV light also triggers your skin to produce more melanin, the pigment that causes tanning. Over time, this can lead to a blotchy or uneven skin tone.

What Does Sun Damage Look Like?

Sun damage can look different on everyone, depending on factors such as genetics, skin tone, and amount of sun exposure. People with fair skin and light hair are most likely to develop skin cancer, but those with darker skin are far from immune, and skin cancers can be harder to detect if they do occur on dark skin. Signs of sun damage include:

  • Dullness or dryness
  • Brown spots or uneven skin tone
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin laxity
  • Spider veins

While a certain amount of collagen loss is inevitable as we age, sun damage drastically increases collagen loss and results in skin laxity at a younger age. Sun damage is also a leading cause of pigmentation issues often associated with aging, including age spots and dark patches.

How is Sun Damage Treated?

No treatment can entirely undo the signs of sun damage. However, we can help you dramatically improve the visible signs of aging and sun damage that affect your confidence. Our favorite options for treating sun damage include:

Enlighten™ RX Peel

The Enlighten™ RX is a unique multi-step peel that can improve pigmentation issues, textural concerns, and skin laxity. It uses a peel applied in-office and left on for the next eight to ten hours, followed by at-home treatments.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels exfoliate away the damaged, pigmented outer layers of the skin to reveal smoother, brighter skin underneath. These versatile treatments can be customized to meet your unique needs.

IPL Photofacial

This treatment uses broadband light (BBL) that targets pigmentation issues such as dark spots and spider veins. It also triggers new collagen production to smooth and firm your skin.
